Mole Removal in Essex

Skin Cancer Screening is more than just checking moles with a naked eye

When should I get my moles checked?

If a mole has changed recently, or it has suspicious features, your GP will arrange referral to a plastic surgeon or dermatologist who has a special interest in skin cancer. This service is available in the NHS, although waiting times to be seen in a clinic can be many weeks, or privately if you have medical insurance or want to pay for treatment. Mole removal is advised if you have noticed a mole that:

  • Has increased in size
  • Has changed in colour
  • Is over 7mm in size
  • Has an irregular shape
  • Has an irregular colour
  • Is inflamed or oozing

Although the majority of moles that present with these clinical signs will not be cancerous, a small proportion will contain malignant cells and may require further treatment following initial mole removal. Black or dark brown moles may be a sign of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer that can result in patient mortality. If you have noticed any of the above features you should consider seeking medical advice.

Skin Cancer Screening

This service is for anyone with concerns about new or growing moles. This involves a detailed examination of your moles, and a complete skin examination, to give you peace of mind and ensure early detection of any problems.

London skin expert, Sue Ibrahim from Elan Medical Skin Clinics in central London and Essex, soothes your skin this summer

Skin rashes, itchy skin and general lumps and bumps seem all the more noticeable and irritating during the summer when our skin is bared to the world.

The team at Elan Medical Skin Clinics in Rayleigh, Essex and central London is led by Sue Ibrahim, a consultant nurse with more than 30 years’ dermatology experience. Sue knows skin, simple as that. She understands how certain health and skin problems can make you feel unhappy and self-conscious and what can be done to help alleviate your symptoms.

From acne, acne scarring, rosacea, melasma and psoriasis, to mole and cyst removal and treatments for dealing with excessive sweating, Sue uses the latest technology and up-to-date approaches to ensure the best results.

Dermatology consultation

If you have a skin concern, a dermatology consultation is your first step to resolving the problem and it is our hope that when two committed parties work together, desired results are achieved.

Most consultations last between 30 to 45 minutes and you will leave feeling fully informed and assessed. If you have an existing medical skin condition, your dermatology consultation includes a general assessment of your needs and a discussion about the range of treatment options available, both at Elan Medical Skin Clinics and those available elsewhere.

If you have a skin lesion, such as a mole, cyst, wart or lump that concerns you, this will be inspected using the latest dermatoscopic instrument so that a diagnosis can be made.

There is an £85 fee for an initial dermatology consultation with Sue Ibrahim and a private prescription, if required. Dermatology follow-up appointments are £35, inclusive of the repeat prescription fee.

Great, central London location

Our central London medical skin clinic is just five minutes from Barbican and Old Street tube stations and a 15-minute walk from Liverpool Street Station. We are situated almost on the corner of Old Street and Whitecross Street, an area famous for its lively food stalls – in fact a lot of our clients work in Clerkenwell and Moorgate and spend their lunch hour visiting the food market in Whitecross Street. So, if you’re in the area, pop in and meet our welcoming team. Until then, check out our website for lots more information.

Woman has her moles checked by a professional - Mole checking is essential says Sue Ibrahim the nurse consultant in dermatology from Elan Medical Clinics in central London and Essex

Mole checking is essential says Sue Ibrahim the nurse consultant in dermatology from Elan Medical Clinics in central London and Essex

Moles, brown spots and growths on the skin are usually harmless, but not always. If you have a certain type or large number of moles (more than 100), you are at greater risk of developing skin cancer.

The ABCDE method for checking moles is very useful but if in doubt, getting them professionally assessed is vital, says Sue Ibrahim. Sue, the nurse consultant in dermatology at Elan Medical Skin Clinics, has more than 30 years’ experience of assessing and removing moles using the latest advanced radio-wave technology. Click here to read reviews from her clients.

Asymmetry

If you draw a line through the middle of a mole, the two sides will match, meaning it is symmetrical. Anything asymmetrical is a warning sign for melanoma.

Border

A benign mole has smooth, even borders, unlike melanomas. The borders of an early melanoma tend to be uneven and the edges may be scalloped or notched.

Colour

Most benign moles are all one colour — often a single shade of brown. Having a variety of colours is another warning signal. A number of different shades of brown, tan or black could appear. A melanoma may also become red, white or blue.

Diameter

Melanomas are usually larger in diameter than the eraser on your pencil tip (¼ inch or 6mm), but they may sometimes be smaller when first detected. If you are concerned, seek professional help.

Evolving

Common, benign moles look the same over time. Be on the alert when a mole starts to evolve or change in any way. Any change in size, shape, colour, elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching or crusting points to danger.

Help is at hand

Moles can be removed quickly and painlessly at one of our daily minor surgery clinics in Rayleigh, Essex and central London and we can also biopsy any suspicious skin lesions. If you have any concerns, book a dermatology consultation with Sue now.

Remember to use a broad spectrum sunscreen

Essex skin expert, Sue Ibrahim at Elan Medical Skin Clinic says the best way to enjoy the sunshine safely is to use a daily, broad spectrum sunscreen of factor 30 + and remember to apply it frequently and liberally thoroughly the day. The term broad spectrum means that the skin is equally protected against both UVA and UVB sunrays.

Elan Medical Skin Clinic stocks a number of broad spectrum sunscreens at an SPF 30 and 50 that are light, easy to apply and feel more like a BB cream than a sunscreen. Some are fragrance free, paraben free and oil free so they can be used on the most sensitive of skins. Some are even suitable for acne prone skins. We also stock sunscreens that are slightly tinted, leaving your skin with a natural sun kissed glow. And with prices from £14.50 it is not expensive to protect your skin.

Men & Women have both benefited from having their unwanted moles removed at our clinic here in London Unsightly moles can be removed quickly and easily with a one-off mole removal treatment at our London practice. We use non-invasive radio wave technology to get rid of moles in a procedure that won’t scar you, or prevent you from returning to work as soon as it’s finished. So, if you live or work in London and you have a mole anywhere on your face or body, that you’d like to remove, we can help.

Analysing your mole prior to removal

Before any removal treatment on moles can take place, our award winning nurse consultant, Sue Ibrahim, will inspect the mole to assess its suitability for treatment. Most moles are harmless, but should your mole raise any suspicions, your mole may need to be sent off for histology. This is important, because some moles can indicate cancerous activity under the skin.

About radio wave treatment for removing moles

Once your mole has been identified as harmless, Sue will lightly brush a fine wire charged with radio waves over the surface of the mole at our London practice. The process causes your cells to vaporise and the tissues in the area to divide. It is called cellular volatisation.

The layers of the mole will be removed, causing only a small wound, which will heal in between 1 and 4 weeks after treatment. The skin in this area may be red for a short while afterwards and a new layer of skin tissue will appear. Although this new layer of tissue will be noticeable at first, it won’t take long for the patch of skin to blend in, giving you a more even skin tone. The mole will be completely removed.

Are there any side effects associated with mole removal treatment?

Mole removal treatment is safe, effective and performed by an experienced, highly trained London – based practitioner who removes cysts, moles and skin tags on a daily basis. We will make the whole process as comfortable as possible for you. As stitches are not usually required, you won’t have any scarring in the area and bleeding is also minimal.

The risks for the procedure are very low and you will be advised on how to look after the treated area when you leave our London practise, but should you have any concerns following mole removal treatment, a member of our team will be able to help you.

If you live in London and have a mole that you’d like removed, please give our expert team a call to book a consultation. The size and location of the mole will be analysed with a view to removal treatment. We’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have over the phone, but when it comes to assessing your suitability for treatment, you and your mole will be seen in person. Please get in touch.
